If you are not planning to use your Mac for developing websites, then you need not read any further.

But if you plan to do website development, one of the first tools you will need is a good color meter. You are in luck. Apple has included an excellent color meter application with Leopard. It is called DigtalColor Meter. You will find it located in the Utilities folder under Applications.

You will also need a few other tools. Here are my recommendations:
  • Yummy FTP is the best, easy to use, most functional FTP aplication I have found. You can find others that cost less, but this one is worth the $25.
  • Smultron is everything you need in a code editor. It is not an integrated development environment (I hate those). It is just a great, light-weight code editor. It is also great for editing other text files.
The Safari browser has an optional Develop menu which includes a web inspector, the ability to control scripting, and other goodies. You will definately want to activate the Develop menu in Preferences on the Advanced tab. It is very useful for analyzing and debugging web pages.

There are also two Safari plug-ins that will be invaluable to any web developer:
  • SafariTidy does HTML validation on any web page you visit.
  • SafariSource color codes HTML tags when you do a view source.
